As a general rule of thumb, you need to reach an insulation R-value of R-38, and add between 10 and 16 inches of insulation. But the attic insulation thickness depends on the material you use. Some offer higher R-value, meaning you need less insulation to achieve the desired effect.

Do I need loft insulation ?

There are many ways to tell if your house needs loft insulation. If you can get into the loft, measure the thickness of the insulation that’s already there. Since 2003, current building regulations recommend a depth of at least 270mm in the loft – use this as a starting point rather than a finishing line to see larger savings but we recommend at least 400mm thickens

  • Location: If you live in a region with fluctuating temperatures or extreme weather conditions, such as cold winters or hot summers, loft insulation can be beneficial.

  • Energy Bills: Take a look at your energy bills. If they seem higher than expected, especially during peak heating or cooling seasons, it could indicate that your home is losing heat or cool air due to inadequate insulation.

  • Comfort: Do you notice significant temperature fluctuations within your home? Are certain rooms consistently colder or hotter than others? If so, adding loft insulation can help regulate indoor temperatures and improve overall comfort.

  • Age of Home: Older homes may have insufficient or outdated insulation, making them more susceptible to heat loss or gain. Upgrading insulation, including loft insulation, can modernize your home's thermal performance.

  • Existing Insulation: If your home already has loft insulation, consider its condition and effectiveness. Over time, insulation can degrade or become less efficient, requiring replacement or additional layers.

  • Energy Efficiency Goals: If you're looking to reduce your carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency, loft insulation can help by reducing the amount of energy needed to heat or cool your home.
